How to raise engagement and achievement through more authentic contexts for learning
In his book ‘Making Learning Whole’, David Perkins describes how our tendency to abstract skills from meaningful contexts is like batting practice without the whole game, and the surest way of disengaging lively minds. Reading and writing are rich experiences with the potential to bring great pleasure, but they are often taught so mechanistically that students associate them with boredom rather than enjoyment and as a result fail to achieve what they are capable of.
You will learn:
- How to make effective use of the Enliven planning toolkit for meeting statutory requirements through a more engaging approach to literacy
- How a more authentic approach dramatically increases a child’s motivation to read and write
- How to develop systems of effective peer to peer feedback where students have meaningful dialogue with each other
- How to design meaningful contexts for mastery learning and higher order thinking skills
All staff have come away with ideas as to how to balance the natural creativity of children with the rigours and requirements of the curriculum. The presentation was an excellent balance between educational theory and its implication within the classroom. Practical activities engaged all members of staff and challenged their ways of thinking.
